Caring for Stray Puppies and Kittens

Introduction

Stray puppies and kittens often endure difficult conditions — hunger, exposure to disease, lack of shelter, and the constant threat of harm. At Saahas, we receive daily requests from people who have found vulnerable young animals and don't know what to do next.

This guide gives you 6 practical steps so that when you find a stray puppy or kitten, you can act quickly, calmly, and effectively.

Important: Please do not leave animals at our shelter gates without prior contact. Reach out to us first so we can guide you to the best course of action for that animal.

Step 1: Immediate Actions After Finding a Stray

When you discover a stray puppy or kitten, your first moments matter. Stay calm and move slowly.

  • Approach gently. Move slowly and speak softly to avoid frightening an already stressed animal.
  • Check for injuries. Look for visible wounds, limping, eye discharge, or signs of distress. If the animal is injured, prioritise getting veterinary help immediately.
  • Offer small amounts of food and water. Do not overfeed a malnourished animal — their digestive system needs time to adjust.

Step 2: Health Check-Ups and Vaccinations

Young animals are highly susceptible to disease, and a vet visit should happen as soon as possible.

  • Visit a vet right away. A thorough examination will identify parasites, infections, and underlying conditions.
  • Vaccinate without delay. Protect the animal against rabies, parvovirus, feline distemper, and other preventable diseases.
  • Deworm. Most stray animals carry intestinal worms. Deworming is simple and essential.

Step 3: Create a Safe and Comfortable Space

Once initial health care is in place, the animal needs a secure, warm environment to recover.

  • Provide shelter with soft bedding. A cardboard box lined with clean cloths or blankets works well.
  • Keep them indoors until their vaccination and deworming are complete. This protects them and your existing pets.
  • Maintain warmth. Very young animals cannot regulate their body temperature. A covered hot water bottle wrapped in cloth can help.

Step 4: Proper Nutrition

Getting nutrition right from the start is critical for recovery and healthy growth.

  • Under 2 months: Very young puppies and kittens may need specialised milk formulas such as Samolac or Ventripro. Do not give cow's milk — it can cause severe digestive issues.
  • 2 months and older: Transition to appropriate commercial puppy or kitten food, or home-cooked options like boiled chicken, rice, and boiled eggs.
  • Feed in small portions, frequently. Begin with minimal amounts and increase gradually as the animal adjusts.

Step 5: Socialisation and Training

Once the animal is healthy and settled, socialisation becomes important for their long-term wellbeing.

  • Introduce slowly. If you have other pets, introduce the new animal gradually — separate spaces first, then supervised meetings.
  • For puppies: Begin basic commands like sit and stay with gentle, positive reinforcement.
  • For kittens: Provide a designated litter area from day one and offer engaging toys for mental stimulation.

Step 6: Finding a Loving Forever Home

If you cannot keep the animal, finding a responsible forever home is the most important thing you can do for them.

  • Screen adopters carefully. A good adopter understands the lifelong commitment an animal requires.
  • Collaborate with NGOs. Organisations like Saahas, YODA, MH14, and Animal Aid can help you find verified, loving families through their adoption networks.
  • Do a home check before handing over the animal.

A Final Word

Caring for a stray puppy or kitten is not just a good deed — it is a profound act of connection. With the right care and the right people around them, these small, vulnerable animals become joyful, healthy companions. Your kindness is the first step in their new story.
